Circumglobal distribution of fish environmental DNA in coral reefs

چکیده
Coral reefs host the highest fish diversity on Earth despite covering less than 0.1% of ocean’s seafloor. At same time they are also extremely threatened. Data syntheses over decades surveys estimate total number coral reef fishes to vary from 2,400 8,000 species distributed among roughly 100 families. But this remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated how environmental DNA (eDNA) could describe distribution in reefs. We generated 504,457,267 raw 12S ribosomal (rDNA) sequence reads 251 samples (2,693 PCR replicates) collected at 25 sites 145 stations five regions across Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Bioinformatic analysis clustered these sequences into 2,160 molecular operational taxonomic units (MOTUs) corresponding distinct (Marques 2020) compared our results, with visual census Reef Life Survey, 2,813 transects tropical regions. Our outcomes demonstrate capacity eDNA metabarcoding water reconstruct well-known biogeographic patterns reefs, such as richness gradients towards triangle, family proportion stability (Bellwood Hughes 2001). Additionally, survey data documented a higher (16%) (50%) estimates obtained underwater carried out 20 times more sites. MOTU per retrieved closely matched within families recorded data. However, revealed reef-associated adjacent habitats, cryptobenthic or nocturnal species, but pelagic wide-ranging species. showed that is characterized by spatially heterogeneous assemblages regions, dissimilarity detected Unlike surveys, prevalence rarity expected under neutral theory biodiversity, suggesting predominance random processes ecological equivalence trophic groups large scale explain biodiversity study demonstrates sequencing provides rapid effective approach characterize assess spatial scales, thereby uncovering hidden patterns.

Cleaner Fish Drives Local Fish Diversity on Coral Reefs
Coral reefs are one of the most diverse habitats in the world, yet our understanding of the processes affecting their biodiversity is limited. At the local scale, cleaner fish are thought to have a disproportionate effect, in relation to their abundance and size, on the activity of many other fish species, but confirmation of this species' effect on local fish diversity has proved elusive. The ...
متن کاملDistribution of fish in seagrass, mangroves and coral reefs: life-stage dependent habitat use in Honduras.
Many coral reef fish exhibit habitat partitioning throughout their lifetimes. Such patterns are evident in the Caribbean where research has been predominantly conducted in the Eastern region. This work addressed the paucity of data regarding Honduran reef fish distribution in three habitat types (seagrass, mangroves, and coral reefs), by surveying fish on the islands of Utila and Cayos Cochinos...

متن کاملStatus of Coral Reefs
There has been significant bleaching of hard and soft corals in widely separate parts of the world from mid-1997 to the last months of 1998. Much of this bleaching coincided with a large El Niño event, immediately switching over to a strong La Niña. Some of the reports by experienced observers are of unprecedented bleaching in places as widespread as (from west to east) the Middle East, East Af...
متن کاملArtificial Coral Reefs as a Method of Coral Reef Fish Conservation
2 Biodiversity is an important factor in all healthy ecosystems. Coral reef ecosystems support an incredibly diverse community of fish species. As coral reefs are in decline due to a combination of factors such as climate change and over fishing, the species which are being supported by the reef are at risk. In particular, coral reef fish communities have been shown to be in decline. Coral reef...
